Say hello to Axel, 3x Grammy-nominated Cuban jazz pianist and composer who has gained recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative compositions that blend elements of jazz, classical music, Hip-Hop, and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

Born in Havana, his path to the United States was anything but direct. After graduating from college in Cuba, he auditioned for a show—Havana Nights—a show that changed the direction of his life. The production, created by a German director and supported by the legendary duo Siegfried and Roy, eventually secured 50 visas for its cast, making what once felt impossible a reality.
New York is home and a place that inspires him daily. The East Village, in particular, holds a special place in his heart. "Where grit meets genius, and every block feels like a poem in progress.”

He was introduced to Jacques Solovière by our very own Alexander Paez. They even performed together at the Todd Snyder flagship store during our week in New York. That night, he wore his Jacques New Black. Other days, he leans towards the Edouard Lug Bold Ebano and the Jacques New Perfo in Black—styles that he wears on and off the stage.

When imagining the shoes in another era, he places them in the Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—yet with something more contemporary layered in. “A futuristic uniqueness.” That same rhythm carries into sound: if his Jacques Solovière had a soundtrack, it would be Bossa Nova classics on vinyl—timeless, warm, and full of movement.
Though his journey has taken him across continents, certain places still hold meaning. Within the Kyoto Metro stands out as the place where he received the most love for his solo project, and a place he'd always go back to.

When it comes to his favorite spot a little closer to home, he says Satis Bistro in New Jersey. "People know you by name and treat you well." Simple but essential.
Spending time with Axel, you get the sense that he’s exactly where he needs to be.
